With gravid ivory , a coarse grizzled coat , and massive overweight protrusions on the side of their faces , the Javan warty pig ( Sus verrucosus ) is plausibly deserving of the “ world ’s ugliest sloven ” title . But just because the porcine critter is not blessed in the looks section does not mean that the precipitously endanger species should be left to go extinct .
In fact , so rare are the pigs – native to a handful of Indonesian island – that researcher have only just recorded thefirst - ever video footageof the animals in the natural state .
“ Javan warty pig are of a similar body size to European uncivilized boar but are a bit more slender and have longer fountainhead , ” say Dr Johanna Rode - Margono , who led the despatch by Chester Zoo to site the hog , in astatement . “ male have three pairs of enormous verruca on their faces . It is these characteristic that have direct to them being affectionately labelled as ‘ the globe ’s ugliest pig ’ but , certainly to us and our researchers , they are rather beautiful and telling . ”
The Javan copper is thought to be one of the rarest pigs in the earth , and over the past few decadeshave been in serious decline . Over the retiring 18 years , their populations have halved , and while the IUCN socio-economic class the pigs as “ endangered ” , we do n’t have a good estimate of their number in the natural state . Of 32 populations of the animals that were known to survive in 1982 , at least 17 are now out or affirm so few bull that recovery is not thought potential .
Endemic to Indonesia , they were once found range across the island of Java , Bawean , and Madura , although the universe on Madura has already been hunted to extinction . The main threat to them is from disforestation , as loggers bust their preferent home ground of teak wood for the highly desirable wood , in accession to hunting for mutant and the pigs pillage local farm .
The team of researcher focused on region where the pigs might still survive on Java and set up television camera in seven location between June 2016 and May 2017 . Out of the places try , the cameras only recorded the brute in four of the web site , advise that it is extremely likely the pigs are already extinct in the three others .
The clips of the pigs that have been release get along from two of the sites where they are still clinging on . In fact , due to the rapid rate at which their populations are decreasing , very minuscule is known about the copper ' behavior .
