Can we all just sit and wonder at this ridiculous jibe of the Moon for a second ? Because that would be great . Seriously , citizenry . Just look at it .
The image is by Switzerland - base photographerPhilipp Schmidli , and come to our attentionby way of Camilla Corona SDO(the intrepid commission mascot of NASA ’s Solar Dynamics Observatory ) , who writes :
It took a lot of preparations and planning to make this happen . He wanted to find the perfect mound , needed to cognize the precious position where the Moon would ascend over the James Jerome Hill and then had to place his friend strategically to make this shot reality .

Schmidliwrites on his blogthat he spend month scouting out the perfect vantage level for this shot , bear much of his reconnaissance with Google Earth and a handheld GPS .
You ’ve surely noticed that the moon illusion is working overtime in Schmidli ’s picture . To reach this effect , he had to station himself more than 1000 meter away from his friend on the bike , and employ a astounding 1200 mm focal length . ( Rememberthis epic footage of a New Zealand moonrise , captured back in January ? AstrophotographerMark Geehad to localise up 2 kilometers away from his foreground subject to achieve that slam . )

Schmidli ’s long telephoto conformation admit him to overwork an core known asperspective distortion , wherein upstage object look significant larger relative to their foreground counterparts ( see here for a more detailed explanation ) . When it comes to shoot the Moon , most photographers will commend using a 200mm+ telephoto lens for precisely this reason . Schmidli use his frame-up to great ( and jaw - dropping ) effect :
