Charles Babbage ’s difference engine — the mechanical forerunner to today ’s digital computers — is a beautifully intricate machine . Now , you may take a real close looking at it usingthis gigapixel image .
Babbage never in reality saw a play variation of his difference railway locomotive : his project coil out of control and became too expensive to complete . But , since , replicas have been made from the original plans , one of which is house at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View , California .
This gigapeixel imageis of the Computer History Museum exhibit , and it ’s awesome to pan around and find subtle details enshroud away . For some position , that hand crank on the left hand side of the political machine stands at a little under shoulder pinnacle , so there ’s plenty in there to get word . So far , the numeric showing is my favorite part . What ’s yours ? [ Babbage Difference Engine in GigapixelviaBoing Boing ]
