From ocean turtles to the humble pigeon , many species have the ability to feel the Earth ’s magnetic field and expend it as a compass to pilot . But despite decade of research , scientists are still not quite sure how they contend it .

Now , a new paper published inBiology Lettersseems to shed some light on how rainbow trout are able to give to the watercourse from which they were   born so as to breed . The investigator identifieda series of genes that seem to be involved in the Pisces the Fishes ’s magnetoreception , permit them to beak up on the weak magnetized landing field of the major planet .

While trout are gestate in freshwater , they transmigrate to the sea and spend the next three years maturing in the sea before cues kick in that they need to return to spawn . Despite having traveled 100 of kilometre over this period of time , the fish still somehow manage to make it back to the exact river they were born from   all those year former , and the cycle starts again .

It is thought that they use the Earth ’s magnetized field to do this , so a team of researchers set out to see if they could identify which   genes may   be creditworthy . They have live trout and put   them in a special tank that   was then placed inside a coil of wire . The research worker   feed an electric current through the coil to generate a magnetic field to disrupt the Pisces ’s magnetoreception .

They then looked at the cistron action in these fish , and compare them to others used as control condition . Out of 40,000 genes , the investigator found around 181 that shift activity during the experiment . Out of these , they find an increase in activity in the brain ’s look of genes regard in earn ferritin , a protein that commonly stores and enthral atomic number 26 . There were also alterations in the gene linked to the growth of the opthalmic spunk .

" The result suggest that the detection arrangement is free-base on Fe that may be link with or inside the eye , "   say researcher Sönke Johnsen in astatement . The discovery fits   nicely with former studies that connect   magnetoreception with   a compound known as magnetite , which also contains iron . The team call up that the gene activity observe in the trout may be a result of the Pisces trying to mend their magnetite that was disrupted by the magnetised blast from the coil .

To follow - up on this , the scientists project to   go the same tests but will or else focus on other organ ( such as the oculus ) to see if similar gene activity pass off . They also plan to run experimentation on other mintage of migratory Pisces the Fishes and compare the answer .
