Dune feels like a product fromanother time in Hollywood history . A movie with the scope and vision ofmodern blockbustersthat tells a complex , matured narrative usually reserved for independent dramas . It ’s hugely challenging , not always straightforward , but accessible and live - in in a way that makes watching it wholly engrossing , even when the thrills and chills are n’t quite as abundant as late hitting have made us accustomed to . It ’s an old - school blockbuster told with visuals that ’ll enchant a new - school crowd .

Based on the fabled novel by Frank Herbert , Dune was directed byDenis Villeneuve(Arrival , Blade Runner 2049 ) with a screenplay by Villeneuve , Jon Spaihts , and Eric Roth . It tells the story of Paul Atreides ( Timothée Chalamet ) , the son of the brawny Duke Leto Atreides ( Oscar Isaac ) and mysterious Lady Jessica ( Rebecca Ferguson ) . Paul ’s birth makes him not just the heir to the redoubtable Atreides army thanks to his father , but a man with amagical , mythic sidetoo , thanks to his mother . When the Atreides are given mastery of the planet Arrakis , which contains the most valuable kernel in the galaxy — spicery — Paul and his sept detect themselves at betting odds with the villainous Harkonnens , who previously controlled the planet . Through that difference , Paul struggles with the burden of hisdual portion as a leader of menas well as a likely prophet .

Villeneuve ’s biggest challenge with Dune is dropping us in a brand unexampled world . Sure , some mass will have take in theprevious adaptationsor scan Herbert ’s books , but the director never trust on that . Instead , he delicately balance plot andcharacter developmentwith establishing the rule of this fancied world , all through care to item . Nothing in Dune is an rethink . Every single frame , every unmarried sound , every exclusive alternative , feels like it ’s been deliberated for months and the filmmaking proudly flavor each detail . set up shots linger a few supernumerary irregular . Costumesare introduced fluttering in the malarkey for maximum knockout . character who are n’t on sieve for more than a second feel like they deservetheir own twirl - off pic . Even the sci - fi props are represent with a certain veneration for their intent , make a bullseye between looking cool and forward-looking as well as old and endure out . This is a new domain for us , but not for the characters .

Thankfully , none of that filmmaking luxury distracts from the story . All of the mise - en - scène works together to base a highfalutin , reverence - inspiring canvass for the story and characters to play on , but it ’s never the degree . Your eye will flit around the frame of reference exploring all the gorgeous prospect and technology , your ears will perk up with the complex sound design anddistinct Hans Zimmer grudge , but after that , everything comes back to Paul , a new man beginning to explore the ways of the wandflower while also fancy out his part in it . Andthis Paulis a complete vas for the audience ’s journeying . His taradiddle is at the centerfield of the more superimposed political intrigue happening around him and yet , thanks to Chalamet ’s performance , none of that is ever overwhelming . His Paul is confident and run aground , but playful , too . As he divulge more about the ways of the world , we bask his reaction and relate to his trepidation . When he learns , we hear . When he evolves , the story evolves .

With so much fictional character development and world - construction , though , Dune does , at times , feel almost too challenging . A shade too slow . Even a bit incomplete . It facilitate vastly that the plastic film begins with the card “ Dune : Part One , ” because then you realize this two - and - a - half - minute movie , much like thefirst and second Lord of the Rings , was made on the Bob Hope and prayer we ’d get to see another . That seed helps cover the fact that the first hour of the movie favour fictional character and satellite introductions over action — the biggest fructify piece   of the film comes with about an hour leave behind — and that the flick ’s climax is between two characters , and not two million ( as one might require in a film this size ) . Villeneuve ’s Dune is clearly about the growing of Paul first , and showcasing this earthly concern in a way of life that will ravish and mystify secondly ; in those aim he succeeds . Soaking in this incessantly marvelous world for two - plus hours absolutely carries a bit of the narrative detriment .

Another thing that helps Dune subdue a few of its fault is the cast . Beyond just the Atreides menage , Villeneuve has filled Dunewith very far-famed , gifted actors who are a pleasance to watch . Some — like Jason Momoa as Atreides soldier Duncan Idaho and Stellan Skarsgård as the immorality Baron Harkonnen — have excellent purpose in this movie . Momoa , in particular , bestow a swagger and excitement beyond anything we ’ve seen from him before . Others , like Dave Bautista as a Harkonnen drawing card , and Zendaya and Javier Bardem as essential fellow member of the Fremen mass , have smaller function in this installment . We see them , they ’re compelling , but we ’re leave waiting to see just how exactly that could diddle out in the future .

What could occur in the future is n’t something you’re able to think about when critiquing a moving picture though . There ’s this movie , this account , and if it does n’t work on its own , that would problem . It ’s not a trouble here . This Dune , by itself , even if we never get another movie , sets a new standard for New sci - fi epics . Villeneuve ’s attention to detail in design , conflate with his expansive vision of multiple public , convey a reverence andrespect for the materialthat piddle the celluloid sense even more majestic than it already is ( and it ’s jolly damn majestic ) .

It would be a travesty if we never got to see the 2d part of this storey , but Part One has satisfying narrative threads with a legitimate endgame that leave you wanting more . The set pieces , while sporadic , are exciting and the movie present such a rattling , racy sci - fi public , you could learn it a million times and observe something new with each viewing . And yet , that dense , complex world exist solely to heighten a personal , relatable , worked up story . A story of a human race where a male child produce to be a man with all sorting of abysmal expectations — arithmetic mean this picture show credibly has on it too . But do n’t worry , Dune is awful in every sense of the tidings , and it ’ll be a moving-picture show fans hold dear for years to total .

Dune just had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival . It open in theater , andon HBO Max , October 22 .
