A number of years agowe reported on how a “ three - person IVF ” procedurecould be used to stop serious condition from being passed from mother to child . The prospect caused serious business organisation among many scientist and ethicists . But now the BBC isreportingthat a bioethics council is green - light the discussion .
The First Child to Have Three Genetic parent
To survey , scientist are hoping to see it used as a therapy to eliminate rare mitochondrial disease . Mitochondria single-valued function as powerpacks that can be found in about every human cellular phone , and just like the lens nucleus , they also contain DNA . Unfortunately , inherited defects in this mitochondrial DNA affects more or less 1 in 5,000 births , chair to severe or even disastrous results .
Researchers speculate that a way to overcome this problem is to take two eggs , one from the mother and one from a donor . “ Just as Frankenstein ’s creation was get by sticking together bits from many dissimilar bodies , it seems that there is no grotesquerie , no intrusion of the norms of nature or human culture at which scientists and their bioethical helpers will balk .
“ The proposed techniques are both unneeded , and highly serious in the medium term , since they ready a precedent for allow the creative activity of genetically modify designer babies . ”
