During the Victorian geological era , child as young as eleven received adult sentences for underage crimes . Here ’s an assortment of children ’s mug shot taken in Newcastle , England during the former 1870s . If some of them were n’t labeled “ picture OF PRISONER , ” you might mistake these portraits for yearbook photos .
These photo — which were germinate between December , 1871 to December , 1873 — come to us from theTyne & Wear Archives and Museums’Flickr page . They describe convicted criminals who pass metre in the Newcastle city gaol . Many of these prisoner were incarcerated or sentenced to concentrated labor for picayune theft — hook wood , bitch , and waistcoat are among the objects that got them into trouble .
