In the millennian search for import , much has been made of the recontextualization of childhood toys . It seems we ’re desperate to twist many things that are comparatively harmless into something much more meaningful than it needs to be . Naturally , the omnipresent Barbie doll has been up for public debate for decades . Is she afeminist icon ? Is she the hinge on which minuscule girls went from diddle house to play out illusion of womanhood in the 60s ? Or is she just another symbolic representation that we snip up so as to play how to limn the ideal feminine . Who knows !

Writer / directorGreta Gerwig – who write the script alongside her penning collaborator / husband Noah Baumbach – doesn’t seem to love either . But that ’s kind of the compass point . There ’s a bit of an unanswerable mystery to Barbie , mostly because she means something dissimilar to everyone who play with her .

Barbietakes the audience by the hand , leading us through the story of Barbie and the political sympathies of Barbie Land , where every day is the best twenty-four hour period ever and every Barbie is incredible , and then , quite short , Barbie twists your articulatio radiocarpea back and enquire you if it hurts to be pretty and perfect and nothing else . “ Do you ever call back about dying ? ” will become the most - cite moment of this movie . Margot Robbie as Stereotypical Barbie wake up up after envisage deadly endings and realizes something is very profoundly messed up with her absolutely impossible life – flat foot are a symptom of oncoming mortal apprehensiveness in a earth of incessantly high heels , apparently . Weird Barbie ( Kate McKinnon ) enjoin Stereotypical Barbie that she has to go through a magical portal into the real world , find the human girl who is playing with her , and … make it good . Whatever “ it ” is . The various Barbies are n’t sure what ’s going on either , and whenKen(Ryan Gosling ) sneaks into the back of the Pink Cadillac as Barbie ’s plus - one , she begrudgingly lets him come along .

Two villains emerge as Barbie undertake to figure out where her girl is in the Real World . The first is the patriarchy , personify both by Mattel ’s all - male person C - cortege of bigwig ( head by Will Farrell as the CEO ) and Ken himself . The second incompatible presence , the one that becomes more existential throughout the film , is that Barbie ’s want of personality and vacuity is a immense flaming problem . call back when I mentioned that the head of this film is that doll mean what you make them mean ? Well , Barbie expands that vibration pretty quickly once Barbie gets to the literal world , and the themes that art , tale , and idea are likewise projections of our own ethnical and societal upbringing gets fully lost in the bright sparkly hot pink sauce .

Making a movie where the chief character is an empty - headed , but very earnest projection of various desire , think that Barbie as a character always seems lost . She stumbles ungracefully from trouble to job , and while Margot Robbie ’s champagne , dazzling performance is incredibly compelling , Barbie herself is always a shell of a person , not quite whole . Really her most consistent character trait are both “ why wo n’t Ken just leave behind me alone ” and also “ girl power , ” which do n’t amount to much — but definitely make me remember that this would have been ten time the movie it is if Barbie had add up out halfway through the film .

Gerwig and Baumbach have compose a messy meditation on womanhood , beauty , and ego awareness , and framed it throough basically doing what Gerwig does better as a manager , but the result is n’t a masterpiece of mod feminist celluloid — the result is mostly just … Kenfusing ? But it is fabulously fun to follow . Barbieis a incredibly good time . The production ofBarbie Landalone , with its practical effects and real set , is worth the Leontyne Price of admission . It ’s deep enjoyable , it ’s fantastically presented , it ’s hilarious . And honestly , that ’s more than enough for most cinema , and it ’s enough for Barbie as well . But , like a mass of millennials who are still struggling to figure out what it mean to be a real somebody , Barbie is a piddling disorientate .

The two real world women — Gloria ( America Ferrera ) and Sasha ( Ariana Greenblatt)—who have been affecting Stereotypical Barbie with thoughts of death are the real warmness of this moving picture , although they are dragged around by Barbie ’s vacuity as much as the doll herself is . They are a female parent - girl duet who are struggling to connect not for any special reason but just because home is unvoiced , and finding common ground is hard . It ’s this kind of valid , mundane regret that echoes throughout Barbie , and one of the most touching moments of the film is when Stereotypical Barbie take care at an onetime charwoman on the bus bench and tells her she ’s beautiful . “ I bang it ! ” the old lady says back to Barbie , grinning . Maybe expiry is n’t so bad if you have a life before you get there .

There are so many mo in this film that are unbelievable ; a massive amount of sentence is spent twinkle at the hearing as Mattel and its leading are made the butt of many prank . It ’s a mocking , if toothless , roast of the corp that has sanction all of this , a reminder that Barbie is done with the grace of the multi - billion dollar corporation . It just slightly overstays its welcome and the powerfulness structures are never unfeignedly changed or interrogated too deeply , but I will allow in : this gag is very funny . All the quaternary - paries breaks are .

Ken , when he goes into the Real World , realizes that it ’s run by men , not Barbies . So when he heads back to Barbie Land to instruct the other Kens about patriarchy , the results are catastrophically hilarious . It ’s the worst kind of vibe ; frat boy on hobby horses , tire out mink coat and personalise leather female genitalia large number in Metallica - style fount , singing Matchbox Twenty at all the Barbie young lady . The remnant of the second enactment twist is also very funny , and continue to underline the item of this picture ; much like dolls are play with and handle and fill up with the estimation of the people playing with them , people themselves are also roughly deal by the fate of their experience with culture and immediate social pressures .

Barbie is an implausibly clever picture , but just like stereotypic Barbie herself , struggles to elucidate on what exactly self consciousness is , and the film is a little ill-chosen about its whole schtik . It ’s the movie for the great unwashed who hate Barbie ; it ’s the movie for people who love Barbie , and it seems to revel in the bare nature of its ideology . All of this messaging gets tied up in knots of Barbie ’s own making , like a cat ’s provenience that get slipped off one finger too ahead of time — but you think that if you just keep mess with the string , it will come out in various perfect impersonation of augury and signifiers . This is the soldier ’s bed , here is the cat ’s oculus , here is the Pisces . But , like many twine games , Barbie unravels .

Although the third deed is a bit of a mess , it is so incredibly gratifying , so attractively fun and absurd to watch , that the mussiness of Barbie becomes part of its fun . While this segment of the film taps into the aggressively cathartic feminism that so many millennials want to give tongue to on a daily ground , it is also kind of a boring list of third moving ridge feminist “ Society is Bullshit ” motto that I glass over over while listening to because ultimately , it did n’t weigh . These were n’t revelations ; these clichés were more like occult passwords that activated each Barbie ’s latent women’s lib — which is a very boring way to come across social sentience . Much like the dolls themselves , the picture show projects an image of feminism , while not actually saying or doing much about it . But son , does this little movement moving picture really , really need you to think it ’s pretty .

More than anything else , Barbie is a disarmingly playful , extravagant , comedic celebration of ego cognisance . It ’s about a doll coming to life and realize that she has wants , that she can be anything — but those ambitions are petty to her desire to just be herself , whoever the piece of ass that is . It blurs the lines of phantasy and world to make cock-a-hoop gesture towards aesthetic theses about stories , idea , open - ended questions , and artistic production that does n’t draw up neatly into a pink and white gingham arc .

in the end , Barbie is a story about displacement reaction that reverberate itself . Gerwig pushes the line of what she can get away with , a corporal triumph that has vacuous junction while still moving around just like a real girl . But much like the womanly impulse to listen to the Indigo Girls while driving by from all your problems towards a totally new set of trouble , Barbie never quite arrives where Gerwig wants it to go . But god , is it fun to watch .

Barbie will release in theater July 21 .
