After six years of ontogeny , Baldur ’s Gate 3 — Larian Studio ’s highly hoped-for replacement to the fabled Dungeons & Dragons CRPG series — finally hit PC last week . Players have been gathering a party and venturing forth to chaos , heroic , and a motleycrew of reference . But for one of those “ heroes ” in particular , that release is the culmination of an act journeyalmost as epicas any pursuance in the Forgotten Realms .

“ I am so humbled and gallant of the reaction to the game and the reception from thespian and fans of D&D and the BG domain … I hope our beloved for the game and for one another make out through for the players and that mayhap , just possibly we get to do it all over again , ” Neil Newbon , the voice actor and carrying out capture creative person for Astarion — an Elf Vampire Rogue and one of Baldur ’s Gate 3 ’s primary adventuring familiar — told io9 over email ahead of last calendar week ’s launch of the game on PC , after anextensive three - year periodof “ Early Access ” beta testing . “ This has been a dream role , work I am rightfully gallant of , a character whom I have a go at it deeply and frankly do n’t screw if I ’ll ever really let go of him . ”

Astarion — alongside Shadowheart the Half - Elf Cleric , Lae’zel the Githyanki Fighter , Wyll the Human Warlock , Gale the Human Wizard , and later on Karlach the Tiefling Barbarian — has become one of the principal faces of the game , a character player have n’t just anticipated but come to know , as he , as well as the rest of the main cast chance in the gap number of the game , has developed and transubstantiate over the course of that long development .

In the geezerhood it ’s occupy Larian to fine-tune and release Baldur ’s Gate 3 , Astarion has become a part ofDungeons & Dragons itself , a face in crossing over with Magic : The Gathering , and the accidental carbon monoxide gas - star of aviral romance sequencewith a Druid wildshaped into a bear that fetch the already - demanded game to a new level of attention . Just under a week after launch ,   Baldur ’s Gate 3 is   one of the big plot of 2023 , cracking Steam ’s life-time top 10 for concurrent players within day of release , and Newbon and his fellow performers are now gaming adept . Newbon , in particular , helped Larian Studios verbatim carrying out capture for the biz through his party , Performance Captured Academy , head a new genesis of actors through digital performance — and found himself not just playing in Baldur ’s Gate 3 ’s earth , but helping shape it .

To find out more about the outgrowth of play Astarion — from sense of hearing to how the character developed over long time of iteration and feedback during Early Access — train out our interview with Newbon below , condensed and edit out for clarity .

James Whitbrook , io9 : Tell me a piddling about how you first got involved with the game . What was Astarion first like when you were first go through the audition operation ?

Neil Newbon : When I was asked to try out it was really for a whole bunch of dissimilar potential function , not a specific character . I submitted for about a twelve characters and I put to work out fairly cursorily what the secret plan could most likely be — and I honestly did n’t wish which function they commit me , as long as I was honk ! I had worked previously with Josh Weedon from Pitstop production before for the Resident Evil 3 : Resistance VO sessions I did in the UK , so I was very rosy that Josh is an fantabulous judge of which player fits which role . He showed my stuff to Jasón Latino , who call me in to do a demonstration seance . I was given Astarion off of the back of that , which was awe-inspiring . I right away recognized him as a fictitious character with a spate of room to grow , delightfully fun , an antihero from the get go . Absolutely my cup of teatime !

io9 : Baldur ’s Gate 3 is a unique carrying into action experience in so much as it ’s spent the past three year being in the hand of player as it ’s developed in other Access , and was in ontogenesis even before that . What ’s it been like for you as an role player , as you ’ve been able to sit down with this character and your performance as the plot has developed ?

Newbon : The initial take on Astarion was a turn more formal and “ tight , ” less flow . He does n’t know the players , so there is a lot of mistrust and skepticism about them — he is really in survival musical mode and is essay to position himself in the most secure way . However , he quickly begin to see the party as friends — or possibly frenemies , haha — either agency , he becomes more easy with the musical theme and start having sport , a rhythm that is very much a part of his make-up but not exercised in a farsighted time , and so we started loosen him up . I was given a lot of exemption to toy and deepen the possibilities of him by both Stephen Rooney , Astarion ’s amazing author , and the hugely supportive directors Kirsty Gilmore and Beth Park — alongside Josh and Adrian Townsend who directed my sessions betimes on , when I start .

Astarion is a deep and complicated case — in truth one of the richest I ’ve ever played and I find fabulously lucky and humbled that not only Larian have supported my development of him with Stephen ’s words , but that the community really like the body of work we offered up and that the audience really embraced him . The interesting thing as an actor in this game is that you get to play every outcome of a potential relationship . It ’s what I love about branching narration stories in games , you get to explore every possible reality of the characters path , knowing all of it will be in the biz as they ’re all potential choices that can be made by the player . A real testament to Larian and the writer !

io9 : A lot of the main companion in the game have virtuously complex personas , but Astarion ’s vampiric nature fix him stand out . Tell me a trivial act about how you originate your performance and his animalism .

Newbon : Like most actors , I started with the hand , specifically the actual givens the writer created in the grapheme life story , as well as any info I could glean from what he says about himself , and what others say about him . I then started to workshop and rehearse ideas for the role , for movement and his representative .

I come from a Method scope , and I have been blessed with expectant teachers , such as Giles Foreman and Roberta Wallach , who I have studied with for over 15 years . To explore Astarion ’s nature , I also used other technique such as Comedia Del’arte , using Arlecchino as a character pilot . In fact , in the Origin card with Astarion ’s introduction — I take his bow directly from that . I also care to use music and actual - macrocosm references when exploring a character . Aspects of his vocalization and personality , look and habits and such , are base on three of my friends . His jape was inspired by an player I go out in Amadeus , Tom Hulce , I believe , that I retrieve being fascinate by as a child . I also referenced a caboodle of Yat Malmgren ’s work on strong-arm crusade and Jung ’s theories for his personality , always using the level and script as a guide . There are element of animal work as well , specifically a opprobrious - white stray street cat that come into my garden a fate . The bozo ’s quite suspicious of novel citizenry but let me apply him now after class of irksome and careful conversation . The cat is feral and beautiful and was a very helpful helper for exploring movement .

For specific moments and scenes , I made a 100 - call Spotify play list which aid guide me into the quality crusade , as well as to localise the timbre and vibe before session in the volume . In condition of Astarion ’s vampiric side , I looked at addiction and cravings and the pangs of withdrawal to aid understand that good . He has injury as well , all of which I can apply to help me live his truth easily . I also was given some exemption with his base pose which is unparalleled in the game , channelize up , seem down on everyone , coat of arms wide pay for mass into his clutch . There is a separate base pose I drop into when his fang and nipper are out , so to verbalise , and his bestial nature take over in defence or aggression .

io9 : Aside from the adventuring , one of the master thing that has vex buff attending in BG3 has been its approach to Latinian language — and much has been made of Larian ’s utilisation of affair coordinators with actors . What was limn that side of Astarion like for you as an actor , how did you go about present that push button and pull ?

Newbon : Again , I focused on his lack of cartel and his traumatic past , as well as his complicated human relationship with sexual activity and courting , when explore how he might view actual relationships and love story . “ Is he manipulating them ? ” or “ Does he genuinely have look for them ? ” were often in conversation when we were take .

The theater director I sour with were very helpful ; they provided setting for which way we were heading in , and Pitstop Productions ( the originative services company where some of Baldur ’s Gate 3 ’s performance gaining control was recorded ) created a safe and convinced space in which to go through these scenes . They prepped us on the stuff and checked in with us throughout . Having participate in sex activity scenes on stage and in film and TV , I was actually very comfortable . I had no issues at all when it occur to shooting things like that .

io9 : speak of romance , one moment that ’s given Baldur ’s Gate 3 some major attention was the druid / bear sex panorama Larian showed off lately . give they play the view with Astarion — what did you make of the chemical reaction from audience to see your character as part of it ? When you were recording that scene , what was the mental process and the logistics like ? How do you feel about becoming the non - bear cheek of such a viral moment ?

Newbon : I think it was brilliant . I actually take Dave Jones ’ , who plays the druid Halsin , session of this , funnily enough . As the type that has the fit with Halsin could be anyone , I remember it was hysteric when they decide to utilise Astarion for the reveal . A glad accident perhaps , ha ! The squirrel reaction is stark , I consider this situation is emphatically something lifted straight from a D&D academic session ! In terms of move viral , I greatly enjoyed it : no result or embarrassment about it at all . In fact , Dave and I were at [ Game Dev conference ] Brighton Develop together , along with Samantha Béart — who plays Karlach — when it came out , and had a drink and a squeeze and a huge jape about it .

Baldur ’s Gate 3 is available now on PC through Steam and the GOG store , and will come to PlayStation 5 on September 6 .
