Mayer is no stranger to repurposing typewriters for hisdecidedly badass sculptures . However , this piece in particular tries to embody the typewriter as a gallant , if age , medium .

The initial inhalation for the piece was that I want to create a ego - portrait in my former age . I need to say something about age , transition ( specially transition into newfangled technology ) , and the berth of the personal mechanically skillful machine in New beau monde , all without making the part attend too “ robotlike ” . I wanted to convey a little human failing , malaise , tedium , and pain , but with an underlying strength and pride .
So sunshine , older man . The trueness is , if you have to go out , you ’ll certainly do it with some style . [ BoingBoing ]
