Just like interior - city drug kingpin and in high spirits - seas pirates , architects also often find themselves orb to orb in mortal fierce fights . This time around , the Broken Bottle prize goes to two firms trying to revamp the mouth of Copenhagen ’s harbour with a brainsick bridgework - building . One squad want to make two towers with a pedestrian paseo between them , while the other designed a building that swoops clear across the harbor sassing , making bridge and pillar one and the same . Here ’s more evidence for your judgment in this death duel :
Steve Holl ’s two - tugboat design met with serious critique after it was chosen as the original achiever of the “ LM ” harbour design . This spawned the response by 3XN . But before counting Holl out , you have to give the squad airplane propeller for coming up with some neat technical school features . The buildings will have a solar - screenland veil of photovoltaics , which , combined with the twist turbine that line the top of the 65 - meter - high pedestrian bridge , would provide electrical energy for all the public space in the whole facility . Not forged .
The 3XN design , basically a rebuttal to Holl , has a proposal meet with yawn - inducing jargon like “ complex , ” “ coherent , ” “ diverse , ” “ typical ” and “ conciliatory ” , but when it comes down to it , the thing is just plain unbalanced . In a good way . The footer bridge is still there , but it is blot out as part of the two support structure , a marvelous edifice and a little building . No give-and-take on the green of this special build , but my guessing is , this being Denmark and all , the affair is exceedingly green like Holl ’s . There you have it , a Danish architectural bitchfight . Ca n’t you just smell the rage ? [ Design Boom – 3XNandDesign Boom – Holl ] Update : A well-disposed reader named Jakob who presumably lives closer to Copenhagen than I do just shared a link to all of the proposals , include the original ones that Holl go up against and crushed . They ’re all gorgeous and insane , sohave a look here .
