Most of us know Boris and Arkady Strugatsky fromtheir novelRoadside Picnic — but their fantastic output was much keen than that . And now at last , there ’s an English - spoken language version of their trippy bookThe Dead Mountaineer ’s Inn , translated by Josh Billings with an initiation by Jeff VanderMeer .
AsNPR ’s Juan Vidal explains :
First published in 1970 , The Dead Mountaineer ’s Inn is a biting , deep fishy tale that sends its readers down unpredictable paths . Our hero is police force inspector Peter Glebsky , a household man anticipating two weeks of leisure time — his first holiday in four years . before long after go far at the titular inn , Inspector Glebsky finds out about a disaster that occurred several years before — a man fall to his death on a nearby peak . Now , the inn has a museum housing many of the recent social climber ’s belongings , and a robustious St. Bernard , the last living remnant of the dead man , stray freely .

Guests at the inn also include a far-famed necromancer , a physicist , a mesmerist and a neural juvenility counselor with a bad causa of tuberculosis . This bunch of oddballs eat together , they act billiards and card , they ski — and now and then they share personal accounts of the spookery they ’ve encountered since setting understructure in the inn . obviously some sort of miscreant — or ghost , or something — is stray the premiss , steal brake shoe , fill ashtray with tobacco , and lead the shower running .
